Introduction: Material Matters and the Salzinnes Antiphonal

The three articles in this “In Focus” section originated as papers delivered at Material Matters, the tenth annual conference of the Atlantic Mediaeval Association held at Dalhousie University and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, September 22–23, 2017. The conference itself was inspired by, and timed to coincide with, a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia — Centuries of Silence: the Discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal, which ran from May 2017 to January 2018 and was curated by Judith Dietz. The three papers, by Marianne Gillion, Annaliese Renck and Sébastien Rossignol, situate the Salzinnes Antiphonal in myriad ways, by focusing on books from the decades stretching across the turn of the sixteenth century, from the 1490s to the 1510s.

Les trois articles dans cette section « In Focus » ont leur origine dans des contributions au colloque Material Matters, la dixième rencontre annuelle de l’Atlantic Mediaeval Association tenue à Dalhousie University et à l’Art Gallery of Nova Scotia les 22 et 23 septembre 2017. Le colloque lui-même était organisé pour coïncider avec une exposition majeure à l’Art Gallery of Nova Scotia dont il était inspiré : Centuries of Silence: the Discovery of the Salzinnes Antiphonal, sous la direction de la conservatrice Judith Dietz, qui a été présentée de mai 2017 à janvier 2018. Les contributions de Marianne Gillion, Annaliese Renck et Sébastien Rossignol contextualisent l’antiphonaire Salzinnes de multiples façons en attirant l’attention sur des livres des décennies autour du tournant du XVe au XVIe siècle.
