André Weil, professor at Aligarh (India), Marseille, Strasbourg, Sao Paulo, Chicago, and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), a founder of Bourbaki, and individualist, had a profound influence on the development of mathematics, especially algebraic geometry and number theory, in the twentieth century. The American Journal of Mathematics was honored by his long affiliation with the journal, first as editor from 1955 to 1958 and afterwards as a member of the editorial board.
