Abstract:
This paper makes a case for theatricality—as a methodology for ethical allyship—by tracing genealogies of theatricality within cultural traditions and epistemologies in India. I study how theatricality differently facilitates allyship across religion and across caste hierarchies. I argue that theatricality creates a context for ethical cross-cultural allyship rooted in the difference between allies and the oppressed.
