Abstract

Abstract:

Historical debates surrounding the potential comparability of European colonialism and Nazi Germany’s expansion in Poland have circulated for over a decade. These debates largely focus on comparing and contrasting German methods of rule and violence with that of traditional colonial contexts; however, comparisons relating to notions of a German “civilizing” or developmental mission in Poland have frequently been overlooked. This article investigates this topic by examining two films released during the Third Reich. These films highlight colonial similarities in their depiction of the role of women in Nazi Germany’s self-perceived developmental mission both in Poland and in planned overseas colonies.
