  • For the First Time in a Long Time
  • Nathan Moseley

We open up the curtains and everyone is there:

Those teenagers who won't stop kissingin the grass of the meadow with the dandelionseeds, tangled into remembered geometries.

Our Bulgarian neighbors, a grinningboy under the shade of a sycamorewaving to us and the fawns in the street.

Further down the road we see our grandparentscarried on a parade float and the river we bathed inand the aisle we walked down

hand in hand with grasshoppersspringing over our feet. In Rinko Parkour former students climb the giant

fruit tree and drink lemonade, drinkRamune, drink wine while William Blakeand his wife are naked in the garden

reciting Milton to the bees. We have not forgottenhow words can hang like spores in the daylight, how to taste their sweetness, how to breathe them in.

And for the first time in a long timeI kiss the back of your neckas if nothing could go wrong. [End Page 88]
