In the originally published version of this manuscript, in referencing the Big Four, this article anticipated the sale of Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House, which, while pending, is not slated to close until later in 2021. As of the publication of this issue, the major publishing conglomerates still constitute the Big Five. In addition, the name of Jesmyn Ward’s agent has been corrected from Jennifer Lyons to Rob McQuilkin, and language regarding the Pulitzer Prize award process has been revised for accuracy.
