  • Artist's Statement
  • Greta Van Campen (bio)

My painting is influenced by the local Maine coast. I am especially drawn to the layered vistas of islands offshore and the continual changes in the sky and ocean. I'm also inspired by my travels to new places and can find something to paint wherever I am. In my hard-edge paintings, I strive to find a balance between representation and abstraction, playing with color and composition while maintaining a keen observation of the natural world. Using tape and acrylics, I build up layers of colors, shapes, and lines until I am satisfied with a harmonious depiction that is simultaneously recognizable and unique. Working from photographs, my aim is to translate the image into a painting that is both playful and precise. Each part of a painting should feel like a piece of a puzzle that when solved reveals a memory of a place and time. [End Page 418]
