Editor's Note This issue is an especially rich one, containing essays by some of the most eminent scholars working on Republican China. I thank them for sUbmitting their writings to Republican China. Special appreciation is due Larry Shyu, who kindly agreed to translate and abridge a Chinese-language report on the diary of Wang Shijie.
