Editor's Note This issue is an especially rich one, containing essays by some of the most eminent scholars working on Republican China. I thank them for sUbmitting their writings to Republican China. Special appreciation is due Larry Shyu, who kindly agreed to translate and abridge a Chinese-language report on the diary of Wang Shijie. I am deeply grateful, as always, to Washington and Lee's Ms. Karen Lyle and Clare Saunders for their generous assistance with the issue. The April 1992 issue will contain a special symposium on missionaries in Republican China, as well as the annual bibliographic reports on studies of Republican China around the globe.
