In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Symposium on the Second Sino-Japanese War, 1937-1945 Editor's introduction: After attending the 1987 Conference on Nationalist Archives and History in Nanjing, Editorial Board member Lloyd Eastman proposed that Republican China publish a thematic issue showcasing Chinese scholarship from that meeting. We asked Professor Li Yuning , also a participant at Nanjing, to help identify promising essays , and she suggested for translation a cluster of six papers on the Second Sino-Japanese War. Coincidentally, Professor Peter Seybol t had. sent me a historiographic essay on Sino-Japanese War scho~arship, and, as it'happened, Professor Sophia Lee was proposing a bibliographic essay on urban wartime China. These scholars, together with two of Professor Seybolt 's graduate students, Ms. Lee Mcisaac and Ms. Ellen Welch Granter, as well as Prpfessor Wu Tienwei make up the team that brought this Symposium to fruition. Concerning documentation: The six essays originally presented at the Nanjing Conference ranged from those that were fully footnoted to "think pieces." Translators and authors have enhanced documentation , but I sense that some readers may want to know more about sources.
