Editor's Note This supplemental issue contains thought-provoking essays by John Israel and Jerome Grieder. Guy Alitto's introductory essay and lengthy cataloguing of current research on local history indicate the widespread interest in local studies in the field today. The issues raised by Thomas Metzger are important for China scholars and others interested in political development. I would welcome response to his thoughtful contribution. Republican China can become with your help a vehicle for scholarly debate and dialogue on important issues. * * * * * * * * * The Editorial Board of Republican China has agreed to my request that the publication dates for the regular issues of the journal be changed to November and April. Consequently, Volume X, Number 1 will be published in November 1984. It will be a special double issue on women and women's issues during the Republic. Among the essay topics to be included are women in fiction; CCP marriage policy during the border region period; women in Occupied China; women's magazines; health as a feminist issue; women students in the U.S.; and several studies of individuals. Also included will be a number of research notes, a bibliographical essay, and a translation of an article on women in the rural crisis of the 1930s.
