Symposium: "Unearthing the Past, Unveiling the Present: Studying Twentieth Century Intellectuals in Present-day China" Editor's introduction: Editorial Board member John Israel organized a panel for the 1988 Association of Asian Studies meetings dedicated to exploring the differences between doing "studio history" of the pre-1980's and participating in the intellectual world of post-Maoist China. He encouraged his panelists to reflect on Chinese intellectuals as subjects , confidants, and colleagues, and to comment on networks and their implications for modern scholarship.
