Abstract

Abstract:

This article examines the quotation of lyrics attributed to Thibaut de Champagne that appear alongside quotations of troubadour songs in Matfre Ermengaud's Breviari d'amor and in Dante's De vulgari eloquentia. In both works, Thibaut is the only French poet cited. While the presence of these quotations has often been noted, the quotations themselves have not been studied together. Thibaut's quotations among those of the troubadours provide a case study for the construction of vernacular lyric authority, which operates on many, often conflicting levels in the two texts discussed.
