Abstract

Abstract:

We inherit views of the Middle Ages that have evolved through following times; these views have often been distorted by hostility due to various factors. A major case is that of medieval love, which we need to understand better. We can document love at this time in abundant and diverse sources concerning marriage, which, despite its frequent imperfection then as now, was supposed to be predicated on love. We may juxtapose the experience of love in history and poetry and see both better thanks to their mutual reflection. By rereading the love poetry of the troubadours in relation to the historical world around them, we can revive the humanity of the poets and their time.
