Abstract

Abstract:

"To the Woman Who, After Complimenting C's Nails, Says Sorry, It's a Girl Thing" is a poem in response to a microaggression regarding gender performance, where the addressee assumes the speaker has no knowledge of or interest in "girl things," referring to choices in appearance which are typically assumed to be exclusive to cis-gendered women, especially white cis-gendered women: painted nails, make-up, long, straight hair, etc. In response, the speaker attempts to assert their own knowledge and experience with femininity as a transfeminine person while also calling into question how that knowledge can rightfully even have a standardized appearance, suggesting that anything can be a "girl thing," and thus, anyone can be a girl.
