Abstract:
In Bhartṛhari's Vākyapadīya, Ātman is occasionally identified with substance. This identification might have been a view of some early school of Vedānta. It can be traced from the early prose Upaniṣads until the middle of the first millennium c.e. The gold or clay analogy can be considered a typical means of illustrating this doctrine.
