This story set in the same sci-fi alternate universe in which Rebelwing (BCCB 2/20) took place features eighteen-year-old Viola “Vi” Park, niece of now-grown Anabel Park from the first novel. Vi gets in trouble for tweaking a simulation on the entrance exam to the exclusive GAN Academy in Hong Kong that would streamline her way to becoming a Peacekeeper, those who pilot sentient AI mechs for the greater good of the world. Because of her influential connections, Vi is let on as a probationary student—a status reasonably frowned upon by her classmates, as “probies” mostly have criminal histories. With Peacekeepers going missing at alarming rates, even probational students are considered eligible for the position, and the shifty head-master sets up a series of tournaments for the students to compete to be the next Peacekeepers. Once again, Tang provides a page turner of a genre-bending novel, this time thoughtfully demonstrating how the events of the first book would influence the world over a decade later. Those who relished the acerbic deadpan humor of the first novel’s characters will appreciate Vi’s personality, and readers who enjoy enemies-to-lovers romances will likely root for Vi and Nicholas Lee, the bad boy and ace pilot on campus. Tang effectively delivers another diverse sci fi, romance, anime mech-esque, boarding school novel for old fans and new ones.
