Lacan with Frost

In this article, the author argues that the unlikely pair of Jacques Lacan and Robert Frost have more in common than one might think. Several examples from Frost’s poetry and prose are adduced to show that he anticipated Lacan’s psychoanalytic insights in several respects. The similarities cannot be attributed to influence as the two were unaware of each other’s work. Frost was certainly aware of Freud but largely took issue with Freud’s view of human nature. It is argued that the basis of the similarities between the two thinkers is structural.

Dans cet article, l’auteur soutient que Jacques Lacan et Robert Frost ont plus en commun qu’on ne pourrait d’abord le croire. De nombreux exemples tirés de la poésie et la prose de Frost sont fournis pour montrer qu’il avait anticipé les idées psychanalytiques de Lacan, et ce, de plusieurs manières. Les similitudes ne peuvent être attribuées à l’influence, car ni l’un ni l’autre ne connaissait le travail de l’autre. Frost connaissait certainement Freud, mais n’était pas d’accord avec la manière dont Freud percevait la nature humaine. Nous soutenons que la base des similitudes entre les deux penseurs et structurelle.
