MIT Media Lab Established in Ireland

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab Europe is being established in Dublin, Ireland, as the hub of the Irish government's new multi-media 'digital village' to be constructed in the Liberties area of the city. The Media Lab research center for technology and the arts has received IR£28 million in funding from the Irish government, plus a further IR£15 million to acquire premises in the old Guinness hop store. The exact nature of the research programs the Media Lab will undertake has not yet been announced but it is expected that projects relating to the arts will feature prominently. The music coordinator of the Media Lab will be electroacoustic composer Tod Machover from the USA, who has expressed interest in interacting with Irish composers and musicians.

Discography of Women's Electroacoustic Music

A discography of electroacoustic music by women can be found online at http://people.unt.edu/~aeh0018/womtechdisc.html. Although international in intent, the discography currently has greater coverage of American composers and the compiler, Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner, would welcome suggestions for additions to the list.

An electronic mail discussion list has also been formed, devoted to issues of gender and music technology. To subscribe to the list, send the message "subscribe WAVE_LIST Firstname Lastname" in the body of an email sent to the address listserv@unt.edu. More information about both the discography and the discussion list can be obtained from Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner, electronic mail ehinkle@unt.edu.

NWEAMO Music Festival

The Third Annual Music Festival of the Northwest Electro-Acoustic Music Organization (NWEAMO) will be held in Portland, Oregon, in October 2001. The festival, dubbed "Also Sprach DJ Zarathustra," will involve two nights of concerts as well as other events. The 2001 Festival will feature electroacoustic compositions involving live performance or a compelling visual element. This encompasses works for acoustic instrument and electronics, live electronic performance, and acousmatic loudspeaker orchestra. Electroacoustic works featuring video, performance art, or installation art have also been encouraged and the Festival will be giving special attention to turntable compositions. With the exception of videos and installations, all pieces will involve a live performance element.

Works sought for the festival include: Turntable works (vinyl or CD), works for solo acoustic or electric instrument plus electronics, experimental rhythmic or dance music, live all-electronic performances, improvised music, live performer with prerecorded material, music involving the creative use of electronic amplification, video with integrated music, music involving theatrical performance, interactive electronic performance works, installations with rhythmic or other audio elements, and multimedia works with audio elements.
