“Natural Born Aliens”: Transnational Adoptees and US Citizenship

Adoptee deportation in the last decade reveals tensions in adoptees' progressive embrace of immigrant identity, and their privileged status as exceptional Americans whose inclusion is predicated on their (white) adoptive parents' full citizenship rights. This paper contextualizes transnational adoption discourses within the history of US federal immigration law regarding transnational adoption.
