Abstract

Abstract:

Since the start of the United States, Plymouth Plantation has carried a symbolic weight as conveying the meaning of the nation. With a strong archival base for such an early colonial undertaking, Plymouth yielded up myriad stories from which were selected those that best represented the requisite message. Although the story of Plymouth may seem somewhat impervious to correction, it has not been entirely static, as various individuals used it to mean what they wished for the United States.
