This moving collection presents a curated selection of personal testimony from Jewish Holocaust survivors, divided by country and covering a breadth of experiences. Using interviews, letters, and memoirs, Hopkinson covers underground movements, resistance from within the Jewish Council, the OSE children's homes, the Kindertransport to England, the forest-dwelling Bielski Partisans, and the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Through these many perspectives and stories, readers get a fuller, but still intimate, picture of the Holocaust in Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Poland. Hopkinson's writing is concise and accessible, and frequent photographs from the survivors and related places offer readers visual representations of the horrors and triumphs of every survivor. Each new place is introduced with a timeline of important events, and each survivor section ends helpfully with links to primary sources. Curricula about the Holocaust have an abundance of material to choose from here with encouragement to do additional research. The book ends with a glossary of foreign terms and acronyms, a timeline, further resources, a bibliography, and a stark warning about the need to remember the Holocaust and be wary of modern antisemitism and neo-Nazism.
