Italian Cataloguing Rules for Unpublished Music Resources

English Abstract:

A large quantity of non-published music resources exists both in private and in public collections, archives, libraries, music performing agencies and broadcasting companies.

Given the importance of such a diversity of materials (music manuscripts, recordings, resources in electronic formats, printouts, etc.), in 2015 the Central National Bibliographic Agency (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico ICCU) gave its group of music experts the task of producing specific cataloguing rules.

The cooperation of professionals from different backgrounds and careers in the working group has been fundamental to achieving this goal: the rules are expected to fit any kind of non-published music resource, from electronic formats to old music manuscripts, from handwritten music to printouts and all kinds of video and sound recordings and files.

The rules are based on the most recent conceptual models (IFLA-LRM, ICA, RiC-CM), on the provisions of REICAT the National Cataloguing Rules and anticipate the extension of ISBD to nonpublished resources, as decided in 2012. The elaboration of rules suitable for several contexts, serving both bibliographical and archival descriptions, was a great challenge with the aim to share all the information without affecting the nature of the collections.

As an orchestra librarian, I will try to illustrate the opportunities offered for non-published music collections by highlighting some aspects of the changes introduced by the rules. The group is currently working on writing the SBN Application Manual for Music, including nonpublished resources.

Une grande quantité de ressources musicales non publiées se trouve dans les collections privées et publiques, dans les archives, les bibliothèques, les théâtres d'opéra et les archives de radio-télévision.

Considérant l'importance de ce matériel hétérogène (manuscrits de musique, enregistrements, ressources sous forme numérique, impressions), en 2015 le Bureau Central National du Catalogue (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico ICCU) a demandé à son groupe de travail d'experts de musique la rédaction de normes spécifiques pour ce type de ressources.

La coopération de professionnels provenant d'environnements différents a été très utile pour traiter toutes les spécificités de ces ressources : les normes ont été prévues pour s'adapter à tous les formes de musique non publiée, des manuscrits anciens et modernes jusqu'aux supports numériques, des impressions aux enregistrements sonores et audiovisuels.

Les normes sont fondées sur les modèles conceptuels les plus récemment élaborés (IFLA-LRM, ICA, RiC-CM) ; elles suivent les règles de catalogage national REICAT, et anticipent l'extension de l'ISBD aux matériels non publiés annoncée en 2012. L'élaboration de règles appropriées pour tous les contextes, soit pour les archives soit pour les bibliothèques, a été un défi passionnant avec l'objectif de partager l'information complète sans affecter la nature des recueils.

Synthétisant quelques aspects de cette innovation, j'aimerais illustrer le point de vue d'une bibliothécaire d'orchestre à propos des avantages apportés aux collections de musique non publiée. Le groupe de travail s'occupe maintenant de la révision du guide pour l'application SBN pour la musique, qui inclura le traitement des ressources non publiées.

Viele unveröffentlichte Musik-Kollektionen befinden sich in privatem und öffentlichem Besitz in Archiven, Bibliotheken, Oper-, Theater- und Rundfunkarchiven.

Wegen der Relevanz dieser vielgestaltigen Materialien (Musikhandschriften, Drucke, Printouts, elektronische Formate) hat die Zentrale Nationale Bibliographische Agentur (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico ICCU) 2015 eine Arbeitsgruppe von Musikexperten für die Redaktion spezifischer Katalogisierungsregeln eingerichtet.

Die Mitwirkung von verschieden ausgebildeten Experten in der Arbeitsgruppe hat viel zum Erreichen des Ziels beigetragen, dass die Regeln alle Formate umfassen: von Elektronischen Formaten zu Handschriften, von Tonband und Videoaufnahmen zu Printouts.

Die Regeln fußen auf den neuesten Konzeptmodellen (IFLA-LRM, ICA, RiC-CM) für die Nationalen Katalogisierungsregeln REICAT und enthalten die in 2012 angekündigte Erweiterung von ISBD auf unveröffentlichte Ressourcen. Die Erarbeitung von passenden Regeln für Bibliotheks- und Archivbeschreibung war eine herausfordernde Aufgabe, mit dem Ziel; vollständige Informationen zu teilen, ohne die Natur der Kollektionen zu ändern.

Durch Betrachtung einiger innovativer Aspekte der Regeln möchte ich aus Sicht einer Orchesterbibliothekarin die Vorteile illustrieren, die zu den unveröffentlichten Musikkollektionen angeboten werden.
