Abstract

ABSTRACT:

Farzaneh Milani conducted this interview with pioneering Iranian movie star Fakhri Fay Vaziri in 1999 in Bethesda, Maryland. Vaziri played the lead role in three of the first five Iranian sound feature films ever made—Shirin and Farhad, Black Eyes, and Leyli and Majnun. Uninhibited by spatial constraints imposed on women of her generation, unveiling her body and her voice, Vaziri became "the idol of millions of Persian movie lovers." At the height of her career, however, Vaziri left the world of cinema and migrated to the United States of America. Recent studies of Iranian cinema, in Persian and in English, rarely mention her groundbreaking role.
