ABSTRACT:
This article explores Graham Greene's construction of friendships between men in The Heart of the Matter and Brighton Rock. The article argues that in these novels Greene frames male friendships in relation to settings that invoke hell, a connection that elucidates the primary role that the subject of betrayal plays in his fiction.
