Some Archaeology on James Beattie’s The Minstrel (1771 and 1774)

Examination of clues left by Beattie and evidence from his surviving correspondence reveal that The Minstrel has a complicated structure incorporating lamination by Beattie’s twin intellectual identities of philosopher and poet and some signs of alteration over time to update it for external developments in his intellectual life.
