D. J. SCHIFF has been a cartoonist since age 4 and a Joycean and Joycean cartoonologist since age 18. He has published comics in The Yellow Springs News, The Ampersand, Boom Boom, and the James Joyce Broadsheet. He was one of John Bishop's first students at UC Berkeley, since they both arrived on the campus in the fall of 1980. They were friends for nearly forty years and attended Joyce conferences and symposiums in Philadelphia (1989), Zurich (1996), and Dublin (2004), as well as working together on programs, posters, flyers, and t-shirts for Joyce conferences in Berkeley in 1989 and 2001. Both of them attended the weekly Berkeley Tuesday Night Finnegans Wake Group, now in its 34th year. Schiff was a visiting scholar at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation in 1993 and has published on the subject of James Joyce and cartoons in Joyce in Context, Let's All Chortle, and Comics in the Writings of James Joyce.
