individually (with the definite or indefinite articles), then in the context of a full sentence accompanied by a scene acted out by children and adults (often in a natural setting such as houses, yards, and parks, and with authentic realia), which helps children to relate. The general themes of the DVDs are eating and drinking, wake up smiling, playtime, in my home, happy, sad and silly, and I can count. The vocabulary, spoken by native speakers, is presented at a slow, yet natural, pace and is repeated several times and throughout all of the videos. Questions are frequently asked to the viewers (e.g.,Qu’est-ce que c’est?),which keeps the children engaged.The focused words are also written out while being pronounced. This helps children learn to make a connection between the oral and written version of the words and supports memorization for older children. Each segment concludes with a review. From time to time, Petit Pim is featured with some of his friends in a cartoon format, which grasps young children’s interest. Pedagogically, the videos allow for a variety of activities. In a school setting, one segment can be shown to introduce new words. The teacher can then continue with a lesson based on the theme. The segments can also be used as reinforcement. In a family setting, the caregiver can easily participate by repeating the words and showing the same items around the room. The main critique is that some might feel that the level of vocabulary could be too advanced (e.g., nightlight, tricycle, door bell). However, as in a natural first language environment, we do not monitor the words we produce around our children and we typically expose them to a large lexical range. This program is definitely a positive and educational one, supporting my child’s learning of French while developing some logical concepts and keeping TV watching to a minimum. Il existe un grand nombre d’études en anglais sur le service-learning ou community [-based] service learning. À ma connaissance, il n’en existe aucune sur cette nouvelle pédagogie en France. Au Canada francophone, ce genre d’enseignement se pratique couramment sous le nom d’“apprentissage par le service communautaire” : les étudiants et leur professeur travaillent de concert avec un groupe ayant besoin d’aide, les étudiants apprenant à réfléchir à travers leur collaboration avec ce groupe. En France, il existe une forte tradition d’engagement civique qui a d’ailleurs fait l’objet encore récemment de débats farouches. Mais le service-learning y est encore très rare dans le cadre des cours universitaires. Même si 236 FRENCH REVIEW 87.3 Reviews 237 ce volume ne concerne pas directement la France ou un pays francophone, il reste intéressant pour les professeurs de français puisque ce type d’approche peut être utile aux étudiants de français à travers les problématiques étudiées dans les classes de français, des études de genre aux classes sociales, en passant par la réflexion sur l’art et l’esthétique, tout en servant les communautés francophones, minoritaires, immigrants, apprenants de français-langue-seconde, etc. Au-delà de son côté idéologiquement et explicitement engagé, parfois assez problématique (par exemple dans son soutien, ironiquement, peu critique, à Hugo Chavez dans la préface, xxi–xxxviii), ce livre reste intéressant.Le service-learning est déjà en soi un engagement social.Ce type d’éducation expérientielle et/ou engagée remonte aux nombreuses pédagogies critiques comme celles des Dewey, Freinet, et Freire, et plus récemment, Giroux.
