Abstract

Abstract:

Despite increasing professional interest in the study of cultures and the development of intercultural competence in the field of foreign language education, it remains difficult for some to develop curriculum that incorporates these constructs beyond a surface level. In order to facilitate this endeavor, we propose mindsets (e.g., taking a content-based approach to curriculum design) and tools (e.g., the DIVE exercise), which teachers might adopt for designing curricular materials that highlight thought-provoking culture/intercultural competence-as-content. In the spirit of counterbalanced instruction, we provide tools geared toward both (inter)cultural and language learning.
