In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Colorado State University Frédérique Grim Wong,Wynne, Stacey Weber-Fève, and Bill VanPatten. Liaisons: An Introduction to French. 2nd ed. Boston: Cengage, 2016. ISBN 978-1-305-26275-1. Pp. 522. Like many introductory language programs, Liaisons has a film as an integral component. Happily, both the film and audio activities are intentionally threaded into purposeful communication strategies as input, input-to-output, and output activities that teach and reinforce vocabulary and grammar. Both film and audio files are accessed via the publisher’s online proprietary iLrn™ program. Marginal notes in the instructor’s annotated edition provide the audio script for activities, tags indicating which communication strategy is involved in each activity, and tips for explanation and follow-up. Output activities progress throughout the fourteen chapters from focus on form to open ended tasks such as drawing conclusions and expressing opinions. New to the second edition are “Oui, je peux!” boxes enabling students to self-check their oral proficiency patterned on ACTFL’s “can do statements.” These boxes are included after each grammar lesson and are repeated at the end of the book as cutout cards useful not only as a portable study tool but also as material for individual oral testing. Also featured throughout are short, high interest cultural notes ranging from the format of telephone numbers to health insurance in France. Likewise, brief notes on language are peppered throughout, as are“Liaisons musicales”introducing Francophone performers and composers. In addition, notes labelled in the margins as “Si vous y allez” provide recommendations on what to see and do if you go to a place 238 FRENCH REVIEW 91.4 Reviews 239 mentioned in the chapter. These notes, as well as contexts and directions for activities, are in French beginning with chapter 3. All of these freestanding cultural inputs are perfect motivators for students to learn French through culture and even occasional travel. An often neglected component, pronunciation is addressed in each chapter by targeting isolated sounds. In conjunction with the integrated film, students are guided to recognize the targeted sound in a certain clip and then practice it.A dictée completes the exercise. Importantly, an early cultural note makes students aware of the tradition of the dictée in French schools.“Liaisons culturelles”highlight customs in the Francophone world with an emphasis on their similarities and differences. They provide paragraph-length material to develop both the reading and writing skills. Tools are provided for a process approach, including pre- and post- reading and writing activities. One such fascinating contemporary topic is the emerging restructuring of the family in Togo due to increasing urbanization. Four “Découvertes culturelles” introduce art, architecture, technology, science, literature, and cinema in accessible paragraph length presentations. Grammar presentations are accompanied by “Pour aller plus...
