une mise en relief” (28); conjunctions such as “tandis que” and “même si” in light of “exprimer l’opposition et la concession”(38); and aspect in tense against the backdrop of “rapporter des propos au passé” (132). Boasting more than three hundred presentational and interpretative activities, oral and written, the workbook provides learners extra reinforcement as needed. In all, Saison 4 is consistent in marrying language forms with meaning (via real-world texts) and use (language functions), allowing for a deeper experience in language, while the concurrent emphasis on reading between the lines in the interpretation of real-world texts places the textbook squarely in what ACTFL would describe as the beginning of properly advanced language use. I used some selections with a level 1 classroom as a supplement to our studies. I do not have a textbook for this class, so it was a useful resource for my students. It appears that it would be easy to use by an individual for either review or an introduction to French. There are eighty“chapters”within the text, each consisting of one page of explanation and one page of exercises, usually between five and seven exercises. At least one of these exercises is a listening task, for which the audio files can be found on an accompanying CD. This textbook could easily accompany levels 1 and 2 for grammar support as the eighty topics range from subject pronouns to qui/que and the passé composé, imparfait, and futur tenses. There are two tests included: one for chapters 1–40 and one for chapters 1–80. Each has sixteen sections and could be divided and used as a shorter quiz. There is also a reference section at the end of the book, consisting of verb conjugations, grammar terms, and a guide to the phonetic alphabet. An answer guide, including audio transcriptions, is included. This would be especially helpful to someone engaging in a self-study exercise. The explanation page of each written exercise is given in English and is very clear. The authors include a photo or graphic for each “chapter” and often implement a chart as a visual explanation . Pronunciation is provided as well, using the phonetic alphabet. I had not previously used the phonetic alphabet with my students, so that required a short lesson. However, that will be beneficial to them as they continue their studies. Explanations are printed in black, with examples in blue and exceptions in red. The accompanying audio files are clearly spoken and easily understood by most students. For the listening exercises, students write what they hear from the CD. I was able to use 280 FRENCH REVIEW 91.2 Reviews 281 the lessons as practice for new grammar concepts. My students were successful in completing the tasks, and the explanation page makes good reference notes for students to keep for review. Some students would benefit from additional review, but more of that would be done through interactive activities during class time. In my opinion, the book is a good supplement to provide students with reference material and the opportunity to practice with new topics as they incorporate the structures into their usage and understanding. Pp. 216. Les enseignants de français langue étrangère sont bien conscients du besoin de consacrer du temps à la prononciation pendant les leçons, car le français peut être une langue difficile à prononcer et son rapport entre l’orthographe et la parole l’est encore plus. Afin d’éviter une certaine fossilisation, il est important de travailler la prononciation des étudiants dès le début de leurs études. Phonétique essentielle du français se veut de proposer une m...
