Jacques Réda: Being There, Almost by Aaron Prevots (review)

In an insightful essay on the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, Larry Norman demonstrates the aesthetic liberalism of Boileau, usually thought to be the doctrinaire spokesperson of classical rules. Though an “ancient,” Boileau recognized in a very modern way the indefinable nature of the beautiful, the irrational response that a great work elicits. Catriona Seth contributes a thoughtful study on women authors of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. She analyzes the personal and political implications of Madame de Staël’s novel Corinne. She also points out how Madame de Charrière eschews traditional happy or tragic denouements and leaves to the reader the resolution of her heroines’dilemmas.Aleksandar Stevic discusses the failures of the young heroes of Stendhal and Balzac’s Bildungsromane to achieve success in a post-Revolutionary and post-Napoleonic French society that is itself having difficulty defining its structure and ideals.Prendergast’s essay on Sartre’s La nausée explores the seemingly contradictory situation of its protagonist-narrator. The latter dismisses literature as meaningless and the world as absurd yet pens the narrative of his experiences and, at the end, decides, like Proust, to become an author. Jean-Michel Rabaté’s essay on Beckett reveals another paradox. The Irish author chose to write in a language that was not his native one in order to create a minimalist form of writing without style. Yet the French versions he wrote of his works display a greater degree of expressivity in language and feeling than those in English. Nicholas Harrison’s closing study on Assia Djebar looks into the many problematical aspects of “Francophone”literature, including the term itself. He analyzes the aesthetic and ethical dilemmas of authors who write about colonial oppression in the language of the colonizer, often for an audience that includes an elite within the colonizer’s culture more than the people of their own native culture. Plus particulièrement, il s’agit d’explorer la manière dont l’auteur présente différentes facettes du monde et de son identité à travers ses descriptions spatio-temporelles. Chaque chapitre, qui regroupe des œuvres de genre, de thématique ou de style similaire, relie un traitement particulier du temps et de l’espace avec une représentation distincte du monde et du soi. Par exemple, certains textes de Réda soulignent la beauté du monde quotidien par des tableaux vibrants de la vie citadine. D’autres, de par leur style post-surréaliste et leur discontinuité rythmique, reflètent la désorientation et l’agitation existentielle que ressent l’auteur au début de sa carrière. Les récits de voyage de Réda, eux, sont empreints d’une poétique de la circulation qui suggère le contact avec l’autre: le mouvement constant du paysage, qui fait perdre ses repères identitaires au voyageur,permet à celui-ci de s’ouvrir à l’universel et donc à l’humanité. Prevots offre une vision panoramique de la biographie et de l’œuvre de Réda, témoignant ainsi d’une connaissance étendue sur le sujet. Il fait aussi bien référence à des souvenirs d’enfance de l’auteur pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale qu’à ses réflexions contemporaines sur la science et le capitalisme. Il examine aussi des textes venant de toutes les époques et de tous les genres.
