his essay by outlining the trajectory of these latest reforms, discussing some of the proposals and how the Académie voted, offering valuable insight into the process itself. As such, this book is likely to be of particular interest both to those concerned with the history of the French language and with issues of language policy. Similarly, this text is written clearly and concisely, in such a way that might appeal even to those with limited knowledge of French orthography and its history. Cerquiglini’s insightful commentary (with the unique perspective of a participant in the process) helps simultaneously to dispel some of the misconceptions about the rectifications and to encourage readers to question their own assumptions. Dupriez’s book continues along similar lines, emphasizing the utility of the reforms (and how the changes will affect the average speaker). The text opens with a brief essay discussing the nature and value of a regularized orthography, correcting some misconceptions about how this standard comes to be. This introduction addresses some of the most common questions and criticisms of the rectified spelling, highlighting the fact that the goal of this project is simply to arrive at a common standard that can be applied in the future. This is followed by a short summary of the changes, followed by a second section of the book that explains each change in detail. This second section, organized thematically and offering tables of examples, serves as a valuable reference. The examples, organized thematically (regularization of accents, singular and plural forms, etc.), are further broken down to specific changes (words in which an acute accent has become a grave accent, etc.). Interspersed among these rules and tables are short historical notes or the rationale behind a particular change, lending interest to the reading. On the other hand, whereas Dupriez explains exceptions to these rules, the rationale behind the exceptions is rarely explained. This omission, however, does not detract from the overall clarity of the arguments. Rather, this book seems an excellent resource for both teachers and learners, an easy way to search for examples or for the rule itself . The intended audiences of these two works are clearly different, but both present their material in an accessible way that encourages the reader to investigate the issues more deeply. L’ouvrage ambitieux d’Albert Di Cristo, auteur de nombreux travaux sur la prosodie dont La prosodie de la parole: une introduction, devrait intéresser tous ceux qui étudient la phonétique et la phonologie du français. Pour l’étudiant, cette monographie servira de résumé des recherches intonatives et prosodiques depuis les années 1960, tandis que le phonéticien profitera d’une étude méticuleuse et assez 258 FRENCH REVIEW 91.3 Reviews 259 complète. Les trois premières parties du livre se déroulent de façon didactique, couvrant les diverses manières d’aborder cette matière, en passant par l’approche morpho-syntaxique de Selkirk et de Nespor et Vogel jusqu’aux systèmes basés sur la structure intonative comme on trouve chez Pierrehumbert ou Beckman. Di Cristo lui-même propose une hiérarchie des domaines prosodiques à six niveaux, qui prend en compte non seulement des patrons d’intonation mais aussi l’allongement syllabique. Ainsi consacre-t-il la quatrième partie de son texte à la description des patrons intonatifs en français et à l’illustration de son propre paradigme. Quoique les trois premières parties du livre soient convenables pour les étudiants de deuxième et troisième cycles, cette quatrième partie, comprenant les deux tiers du texte, intéressera surtout les spécialistes de phonétique.
