Abstract

This article analyzes human and non-human relations in the Huainanzi 淮南子 to interrogate the claim that early Chinese thought is environmentally valuable because it is based on assumptions of holism and harmony. It contends that the Huainanzi’s argument serves to complicate that claim and open up new research possibilities by anticipating the idea of the “Anthropocene.”
