As we embark upon our fourteenth year of publication, Music, Sound, and the Moving Image would like to announce that Helen Hanson is stepping down as co-editor and Liz Greene joins us as her successor. Helen Hanson started with MSMI in January 2012 when co-founder Anahid Kassabian left the journal and a year after Jay Beck started as co-editor. Along with Ian Gardiner, Helen has been a cornerstone of the journal and responsible for much of our growth over the last decade. It is under her tutelage that we have grown our readership, expanded our editorial board, and launched new initiatives such as the Claudia Gorbman Graduate Student Writing Award in conjunction with the Sound and Music Special Interest Group of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Over her eight years as co-editor Helen pursued a very active research agenda while also serving as the academic director for The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum at the University of Exeter. Building on the historical research that shaped her most recent book Hollywood Soundscapes: Film Sound Style, Craft and Production in the Classical Era (2017), Helen’s departure from MSMI coincides with the start of her latest project ‘Resoundings: Tracing the History of Women’s Sound Work in Hollywood Cinema’ funded by the British Academy. While her research is just beginning, it has already resulted in the publication of ‘Looking for Lela Simone: Singin’ in the Rain and microhistories of women’s sound work behind the scenes and below-the-line in Classical Hollywood Cinema’ in Women’s History Review this past January. While we are saddened by Helen’s departure, we thank her for her exceptional work as an editor and for being a wonderful colleague.

Liz Greene, Reader in Film and Sonic Arts at Liverpool John Moores University, joins us as our new co-editor though her association with MSMI dates back to 2016 when she co-edited a special issue on ‘Breath and the Body of the Voice in Cinema’ with Ian Garwood. As well as being an academic, Liz has previously worked in location sound in the Irish film and television industries. In addition to her vast range of production expertise, Liz has published widely on sound in film and media including co-editing The Palgrave Handbook of Sound Design and Music in Screen Media: Integrated Soundtracks (2016) with Danijela Kulezic-Wilson. [End Page 1] Liz’s work represents a synthesis of research and practice and her current work predominantly focuses on sound in the audiovisual essay. It is our hope that Liz’s interest in videographic criticism will allow MSMI to host audiovisual essays in conjunction with future publications. [End Page 2]
