On May 11, 2020, a panel of academics and industry leaders came together to discuss the state of equity and inclusion in the advertising industry. In Part I of this roundtable, participants discuss many topics: definitions of diversity, equity, and inclusion; implicit versus unconscious bias; microaggressions; the impact of equity, inclusion, and bias issues on the industry and consumers; how and why problematic ads appear; how consumers respond to problematic ads in a world made highly connected through social media; the importance of teaching students about structural problems in society and the advertising industry across all classes in an academic program; why images used to represent people in advertising matter; the role of chief creative officers and chief strategy officers in equity and inclusion efforts; and the place of chief diversity and inclusion officers in the workplace as well as their contributions to the industry's success.
