Abstract:
"On Gurning" is a lyric essay that weaves together the writer's research on gurning contests, her interest in Emily Dickinson, and her observations on the discomforts of occupying a body. It explores ugliness, loneliness, gender, abjection, and the strategies we employ to make embodiment more palatable.
