Petitioning about the Revolutionary Nation: Social History and Communication under the Early Kérékou Regime in Benin, 1975–1977

In Benin under the authoritarian regime installed by Mathieu Kérékou in 1972—officially "Marxist-Leninist" from 1974 onwards—individuals sent an impressive number of petitions to the president himself. Those were analyzed and commented on by the presidential office (the cabinet civil), and put into wider debates on "revolutionary norms" and "social realities" in the postcolonial society. Categorizing them into the three narratives of conspiracy and political struggles, sorcery and "traditional religion," and conflict regarding land and family structures, I argue that the interpretation of such petitions and their contexts of tensions and conflicts allows creating a social historical panorama for the years 1975 to 1977. The themes express principal concerns and contradictions in (southern) Beninese society, and their analysis constitutes a mighty statement regarding the importance of such archival sources for postindependence social histories in West Africa.

Au Bénin sous le régime autoritaire mis en place par Mathieu Kérékou en 1972 (officiellement « marxiste-léniniste » à partir de 1974) des individus ont adressé un nombre impressionnant de pétitions au président lui-même. Celles-ci ont été analysées et commentées par le bureau présidentiel (le cabinet civil), et ont fait l'objet de débats plus larges sur les « normes révolutionnaires » et les « réalités sociales » dans la société postcoloniale. En les catégorisant en trois récits de complot et de luttes politiques, de sorcellerie et de « religion traditionnelle », et de conflit concernant les structures foncières et familiales, je soutiens que l'interprétation de ces pétitions et de leurs contextes de tensions et de conflits permet de créer un panorama historique social pour les années 1975 à 1977. Les thèmes expriment les principales préoccupations et contradictions de la société béninoise (méridionale), et leur analyse constitue également une puissante déclaration concernant l'importance de ces sources d'archives pour les histoires sociales postindépendance en Afrique de l'Ouest.
