Abstract

Abstract:

Scholars, politicians and intellectuals continue to debate the meaning and legacy of 68 for today, as evidenced by the numerous conferences that took place in 2018 in light of the fiftieth anniversary of the May events. This special discussion in The Tocqueville Review emerged from such a conference, which took place on June 9, 2018 through the Center for Critical Democratic Studies at the American University of Paris. Four contributions by Wim Weymans, Dick Howard's, Daniel Zamora, and Daniel Steinmetz-Jenkins presented in this issue sought to reflect on the importance of the May events for democracy in Europe and North America fifty years after the fact.
