Abstract

Abstract:

This Advertising in the Archives article presents an overview of advertising and marketing archives around the world. It highlights attempts by advertising historian Fred Beard to locate and publish information about many of the world's largest and most important archives and special collections of historical advertisements and other categories of marketing ephemera. Beard and advertising historian Edward Timke discuss the origins of the effort to uncover the important artifacts and records held by major libraries, museums, industry organizations, corporations, and personal collectors, and how they can be used by future historians to explore interesting and under-investigated topics and questions about advertising.
