abstract:
The demolition of Harrisburg's Eighth Ward between 1913 and 1919 displaced a substantial population of eastern European Jewish immigrants and uprooted their religious congregations. Yet the migration of people, synagogues, and institutions uptown and their continuity in the following decades are a testimony of the community's essential cohesion.
