labs: call for abstracts 2019–2020

Leonardo LABS is an online database of MA, MFA and PhD thesis abstracts that include an investigation of art, science and/or technology. It is curated by an international peer review panel of educators and practitioners in the field. The due date for abstracts published in the 2019–2020 cycle is 30 June 2020. leonardo and nokia bell labs residency

Leonardo/ISAST and the Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) program at Nokia Bell Labs launched a joint residency in August 2019 that brings in art researchers with an interest in science and engineering to spend six weeks at the Nokia Bell Labs Sunnyvale office. The inaugural resident was Bay Area–based media artist/theorist Jules Litman-Cleper. Litman-Cleper unpacks simulation as a way of knowing, the formation and deformation of patterns in organic systems and perceptual aspects of randomness and ecologies—their flows of information, spatial dynamics and protection. Their project "Earth-Centered Communication Technology" rethinks the interface between living networks of organisms, plants, fungi and other species, which can both define us emotionally and sustain us physically, and the technological communication networks on which we rely increasingly for emotional and material information.

open calls for leonardo journal: special sections

The current calls for papers for Leonardo journal include special sections such as LASER, Pioneers and Pathbreakers, Leonardo STEAM Initiative on Education, Science and Art: Understanding the Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue, and Trans-Creation: Creativity, Innovation and Empirical Translation. Leonardo is interested in work that crosses the artificial boundaries separating contemporary arts and sciences. Featuring illustrated articles written by artists about their own work as well as articles by historians, theoreticians, philosophers and other researchers, the journal is particularly concerned with issues related to the interaction of the arts, sciences and technology.
