From its origins in the 1940s through the 1960s, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine exceeded the boundaries of modernist literature and mystery fiction, making connections between genre and literary fiction and contributing to the development of a popular postmodernism. Cold War mystery fiction makes visible the contradictions inherent in US containment culture, revealing the epistemological apprehensions that underpin and connect modern and postmodern literature. Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine constellates Cold War cultural binaries through the lens of mystery, performing the breakdown of these narratives into spatialized and hybrid forms, shaping the turn from modernism into postmodernism.
