Une histoire de l'usager des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC)

What can be said about users of information and communication technologies (ICT) that would hold true both for the various domestic technologies and for the past one hundred years? The 20th century was a period of constant innovation, with a surge in the number of tools, continuous transformations and ever-faster dissemination throughout the population. Beginning with a review of research about technology in France, this paper endeavours to understand how the individual and his/her social network are redefined through the use of technology. After presenting a few specific characteristics of users, the paper focuses on two parallel tensions that create controversy in the literature: between pioneering users and mainstream users, on the one hand, and between users on an individual or collective basis.

Que peut-on dire sur l'usager des technologies de l'information et de la communication qui vaille à la fois pour les différentes technologies domestiques concernées et pour les cent dernières années ? Cette période voit en effet à la fois des innovations permanentes, la démultiplication des outils, leur transformation incessante et leur diffusion accélérée dans toutes les strates de la population. Cet article propose, à partir d'une relecture des recherches sur la situation française, de comprendre comment l'individu se redéfinit et redéfinit son réseau social à travers leur utilisation. Après avoir présenté quelques caractéristiques propres aux usagers, l'article se développe autour d'une double tension qui fait controverse dans les travaux : la première entre usager pionnier et usager de masse, la seconde entre usager individuel et usager collectif.
