In this enticing book on early child development, the reader-aloud gently teases the young listener with accounts of how a typical baby gets on with the business of life: [End Page 280] "Each new day, in different ways, a baby like you is born into the world … pushed up up up to the water's surface for a gulp of fresh air." At least that's how it works for a baby hippo, pictured with its mother in a glorious photograph. In the case of a pictured baby giraffe, it's "dropped down down down to the ground." An ensuing spread then arrives at the human event: "But you were not pushed up or dropped down… . Instead, you slid and you wiggled your way into the world—into your mama's waiting arms." More animal/human baby comparisons follow this pattern, and most seasoned or repeat listeners will catch the joke and then insist on hearing the slightly smaller print text that offers a tidbit of additional information. There is a touch of idealization, but for cozy laptime sharing of simple information, engrossing photographs, and mutual giggles, this could be the perfect family pick.
