In this companion novel to the Greenglass House series (Greenglass House, BCCB 12/14), middle-schooler Marzana is bored after her adventures in Greenglass and tired of living in the shadow of her mother, a legendary smuggler. When a mayoral candidate's daughter is kidnapped, Marzana decides to help, searching through her parents' files for information so she can locate the kidnapped girl. With her best [End Page 218] friend Nialla, Marzana recruits a team of middle-schoolers with specialized talents to decode a hidden message in a ransom note and connect the dots between the odd things brewing in their usually safe town. Milford's mystery is a worthy addition to her already established setting of Greenglass House that will also appeal to new readers. Those who revel in higher page counts that delve into the nitty-gritty development details will be pleased with this novel's approach to its characters and setting, with the town and the eccentric middle-school building receiving as much characterization as the cast; Milford's descriptive writing is a treat that easily sets the atmosphere of each scene. Genre fans will appreciate that red herrings abound and twists lie around every turn, and the ending satisfyingly ties up all loose ends. Final illustrations not seen.
