This introduction contextualizes the essays that make up this special issue in terms of theories of translingualism. It discusses the 'global turn' in literary studies that has led to the questioning of categories of national literatures. It then explores the 'translingual turn' in more recent scholarship. It shows that early analyses of translingual literature were pivotal to our understandings of writing that challenges "the monolingual paradigm" (Yildiz). It also discusses critiques of these interventions and calls for more theorized, nuanced approaches to the term. It then presents the articles in terms of how they take such an approach to analyzing translingual writing.
