Abstract

Abstract:

The Greek translator of Exodus employed specific strategies in rendering the Hebrew noun [inline-graphic 02i], using primarily the noun θεός. When [inline-graphic 03i] refers to Israel’s deity, the translator usually employs an arthrous form of θεός. Analyzing the translator’s treatment of [inline-graphic 04i] as well as his use of θεός enables us to define more accurately what the phrase “faithful yet free” means as a description of his translation strategy. Perhaps “faithful to the source but accommodating to the target text” would be a more appropriate description.
