Abstract

Abstract:

In the United Kingdom, those experiencing mental distress were long seen and classified as a group separate from the rest of humanity, still very evident at the time of Adler's remarkable 1935 article, "The Fundamental Views of Individual Psychology." In this, he eloquently challenges the use of such classifications. This response traces Adler's influence following his visits to the United Kingdom in the 1920s and 1930s and identifies the progression of U.K. mental health services over the 80 years since his article was written.
