In “Portrait on Metal with Patterned Scarf and Streak of Light,” the author meditates on the experience of sitting for a tintype portrait. Through lyric prose, the essay considers old and new photographic techniques, exploring what it means to age and to lose one’s beauty before the camera’s unblinking gaze.
