Abstract

Abstract:

Pedro de Urdemalas, the main protagonist of Cervantes's play of the same name, has been extensively studied as a Protean figure due to his malleability to adapt to the various professions and masks he adopts throughout the comedia. This essay examines Pedro de Urdemalas through a different lens: as a linguistic polytropos of sorts; that is, a character who is created, invented, and reinvented time and time again by the power of language, through processes of heteronomination and heteronomy.
